Learn how to import existing data into Index and export your work

Import and Export Data

Index makes it easy to bring in data from other tools and export your work when needed. This guide covers the various import and export options available in Index.

Importing Data

Import from Linear

If you're already using Linear for project management, you can import your existing Linear projects into Index:

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations > Linear
  2. Connect your Linear account if you haven't already
  3. Select Import Projects from Linear
  4. Choose the projects you want to import
  5. Map any custom fields as needed
  6. Click Import

Your Linear projects will be imported into Index with all their attributes and relationships preserved.

Import from Productboard

If you're migrating from Productboard to Index, you can import your existing product data:

  1. Go to Settings > Import/Export > Import from Productboard
  2. Connect your Productboard account
  3. Select the components and features you want to import
  4. Map Productboard fields to Index fields
  5. Click Import

Import from Jira Product Discovery

To import data from Jira Product Discovery:

  1. Go to Settings > Import/Export > Import from Jira Product Discovery
  2. Connect your Jira account
  3. Select the ideas and initiatives you want to import
  4. Map Jira fields to Index fields
  5. Click Import

Import from CSV

For data from other tools or custom spreadsheets, you can use CSV import:

  1. Go to Settings > Import/Export > Import from CSV
  2. Download the CSV template
  3. Fill in your data following the template format
  4. Upload your completed CSV file
  5. Map CSV columns to Index fields
  6. Click Import

Import from Notion

If you've been managing your product planning in Notion, you can import that data into Index:

  1. Go to Settings > Import/Export > Import from Notion
  2. Connect your Notion account
  3. Select the pages or databases you want to import
  4. Map Notion properties to Index fields
  5. Click Import

Exporting Data

Export to CSV

To export your Index data to CSV:

  1. Navigate to the view containing the data you want to export
  2. Click the (more options) menu
  3. Select Export to CSV
  4. Choose which fields to include in the export
  5. Click Export

The CSV file will be downloaded to your computer.

Export to Excel

For more advanced spreadsheet capabilities, you can export to Excel:

  1. Navigate to the view containing the data you want to export
  2. Click the (more options) menu
  3. Select Export to Excel
  4. Choose which fields to include in the export
  5. Click Export

The Excel file will be downloaded to your computer.

Export to PDF

To create a shareable PDF document of your projects:

  1. Navigate to the view containing the data you want to export
  2. Click the (more options) menu
  3. Select Export to PDF
  4. Choose the layout and formatting options
  5. Click Export

The PDF file will be downloaded to your computer.

Bulk Operations

Bulk Import

For large datasets or frequent imports, you can use the bulk import API:

  1. Go to Settings > API > Generate API Key
  2. Use the API documentation to structure your data
  3. Use the bulk import endpoint to upload your data

Bulk Export

Similarly, for large-scale exports:

  1. Go to Settings > API > Generate API Key
  2. Use the bulk export endpoint to retrieve your data
  3. Process the data as needed in your own systems

For complex migrations from other tools, Index offers professional data migration services:

  1. Contact support@index.inc with details about your current tool and data volume
  2. Our team will provide a migration plan and timeline
  3. We'll handle the technical aspects of the migration
  4. You'll receive a fully migrated workspace with all your data

Best Practices

Prepare Your Data Before Import

  • Clean up any outdated or irrelevant data
  • Standardize naming conventions
  • Ensure required fields are populated
  • Remove duplicate entries

Test with a Sample Import

Before importing large datasets, test with a small sample to ensure the mapping works as expected.

Regular Backups

Export your Index data regularly as a backup, especially before making significant changes to your workspace.

Document Your Import/Export Process

If you perform regular imports or exports, document your process for consistency and to make it easier for team members to follow.
