Slack Integration

Connect Index with Slack to streamline communication and feedback

Slack Integration

Index's Slack integration connects your product planning with your team's communication hub, allowing you to capture feedback, share updates, and collaborate on product decisions without leaving your workflow.

Key Features

Capture Customer Feedback

Easily capture customer feedback and feature requests from Slack conversations and turn them into actionable items in Index. This ensures valuable insights from customer-facing teams don't get lost in Slack threads.

Project Updates and Notifications

Receive automated notifications in Slack when there are important updates to your Index projects. Keep your team informed about new projects, status changes, and approaching deadlines.

Command-Line Interface

Use slash commands in Slack to interact with Index without switching context. Create new projects, check status updates, or search for information directly from your Slack workspace.

Rich Previews

When sharing Index links in Slack, they automatically expand to show rich previews with key information about the project or item, making it easier for team members to get context without clicking through.

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations > Slack
  2. Click Connect Slack Workspace
  3. Authorize Index to access your Slack workspace
  4. Select which Slack channels you want to connect with Index

  4. Choose which channels should receive different types of notifications
  5. Click Save

Using Slash Commands

Once the integration is set up, you can use the following slash commands in Slack:

  • /index search [query] - Search for projects or items in Index
  • /index create [title] - Create a new project or item
  • /index status - Get a summary of current project statuses
  • /index capture [message] - Capture feedback or an idea from a Slack message

Use Cases

Customer Feedback Collection

Customer-facing teams can easily capture feedback and feature requests from customer conversations in Slack and send them directly to Index for product managers to review and prioritize.

/index capture "Customer ABC requested the ability to export data in CSV format"

Cross-Team Collaboration

Share Index project links in Slack channels to facilitate discussions about product direction and priorities. The rich previews provide context for team members who might not regularly use Index.

Status Updates

Set up automated notifications to keep stakeholders informed about project progress without manual reporting. For example, receive notifications when a project moves from "Planning" to "In Progress" or when a deadline is approaching.

Quick Access to Information

Use slash commands to quickly access information from Index without leaving Slack. This is particularly useful during meetings when you need to reference project details or timelines.

/index search "Q2 Roadmap"

Best Practices

Create Dedicated Channels

Create dedicated Slack channels for different types of Index notifications to avoid cluttering your main communication channels. For example:

  • #index-customer-feedback for captured customer feedback
  • #index-project-updates for project status changes
  • #index-announcements for major milestones and launches

Train Your Team

Ensure everyone on your team knows how to use the slash commands and feedback capture features. This maximizes the value of the integration and ensures no valuable insights are lost.

Regular Cleanup

Periodically review captured feedback and requests to ensure they're properly categorized and prioritized in Index. This prevents your Index workspace from becoming cluttered with duplicate or outdated items.

Customize Notification Frequency

Adjust notification settings to find the right balance between staying informed and avoiding notification fatigue. Consider which updates are truly important for real-time notifications versus daily or weekly digests.

Troubleshooting

Connection Issues

If the Slack integration stops working:

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations > Slack
  2. Click Test Connection to verify the integration is working
  3. If issues persist, click Reconnect to reestablish the connection

Missing Notifications

If you're not receiving expected notifications:

  1. Check that the notification is enabled in your notification settings
  2. Verify that the Slack channel is correctly configured
  3. Ensure the Index bot has been added to the relevant Slack channels

Command Failures

If slash commands aren't working:

  1. Make sure you're using the correct command syntax
  2. Check that the Index app has the necessary permissions in your Slack workspace
  3. Try reinstalling the Slack app if issues persist
